A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
