European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
